There is a voice inside of you
that whispers all day long,
'I feel that this is right for me,
I know that this is wrong.'
No teacher, preacher, parent, friend
or wise man can decide
what's right for you - just listen to
the voice that speaks inside.
The Autumnal Equinox occurs as the Sun enters the tropical sign of Libra on September 22nd in the northern hemisphere, and September 23rd, 2018 in southern hemisphere. Venus, the Goddess of Sensuality, Desire, and Relationship, rules Libra as her outer yang expression. Libra is about balance... finding balance between the anima and animus within ourselves, and in the world. Finding the balance between ourselves and others in the world. Wherever Libra resides in the natal chart, the nature of 7th House, and of Venus, the Goddess herself, correlates to where we pull others into our lives, and to where we are drawn together with others as well. In the 7th house and Libra we project our core essential needs for survival, defined by Venus working through her Yin inner expression in zodiacal Taurus and the 2nd House. Those necessities and priorities emotionally generate the magnetic frequencies that become our energetic matrix of attraction or repulsion. Venus magnetic nature exerts the pull that we call the law of attraction drawing in people and circumstances, hopes, dreams, fears and obsessions.
At this equinox, Venus is transiting Scorpio. Relationships and outer world circumstances can create powerful currents of direct emotional experiences that take us to the edge. Venus is in a full phase opposition to Uranus retrograde in Taurus. Compromise is elusive as opposing and compelling forces collide like tectonic plates. A tight facilitating trine is formed to Grandmother Moon and spiritualizing Neptune, both in Neptune's native, sometimes unfathomable, watery realm of Pisces. Sensitivity and receptivity are heightened. Dreams might be more vivid. Emotions run deep. We feel the need to merge with something undefinable that is much greater than ourselves. Idealism drives the pursuit of our essential needs. We seek not just meaning, but ultimate meaning and ultimate Truth. The old paradigm is dying as we collectively dream a new one.
Venus is approaching her 40-day retrograde cycle, from October 5th to November 16th, spanning most of the Fall season. As the Goddess reverses her path, and travels inwards, and downwards through Scorpio she will provide ample time and opportunity to examine the nature and quality of our relationships, but also how we are evolving through those relationships. There will also be necessary focus on where our priorities lie, how we have expressed and acted upon them, and how well they have served us.
At the equinox…
Mercury has just emerged from the “heart of the Sun”, less than 2 degrees from Sol, fully resonant with the need to express and self-actualize the saturation of solar vitality. Mercury embodies our personal narrative--the stories that we tell others, and the stories we tell ourselves. At the equinox, Mercury approaches a meet-up with Divine Mother Ceres, who the Greeks knew as Demeter. Mercury as psychopomp, guide of souls to the underworld, escorts us along life’s pathways, and can usher us safely through our own “underworld” connecting us with the parts of ourselves that been held captive within our subconscious, just as Hermes went into the Underworld to rescue Persephone.
We might be reminded of painful personal losses, or deep wounds from the past as the Sun joins Ceres in Libra and exactly opposes Chiron retrograde in Aries. These roiling reminders of present and past upheavals are symptoms of nascent dis-ease emerging. Symptoms are simply attempts for the “body” to heal.
In addition to the Sun-Ceres and Moon-Neptune conjunctions there is additional Goddess energy that permeates and actualizes this seasonal “moment”. Asteroid Vesta, unflinchingly committed to her sacred path, joins authoritative Saturn, redoubled in his native Capricorn, where chthonic Pluto also dwells. Our "Lady of the Hearth" holds the space for the Sacred Fire, the Agni in Vedic religion, the Holy Fire of Orthodox Christianity, and the Ner Tamid of Solomon’s Temple. Unlike other Greek gods and goddesses, there were no temples erected to Vesta, though her presence was invoked at the beginning and end of rituals, ceremonies, and gatherings. Vesta, Hestia to the Greeks, was the hearth that was the vessel of the Sacred Fire and the hearth that stood at the center of every home and community--the sacred fire of Life Force that burns in every human heart(h). Mercury guides us to her door. Vesta/Hestia invites us in for a deeper connection. Her path leads us home, to our center, to where we find the connection to our personal authenticity, and to the sacred agreements that we have made with ourselves. This powerful cardinal earth archetypal blending shows us ways to build and sustain, and with Mercury’s help, express our core beliefs within the framework of consensus reality.
Mars in Aquarius meets the Lunar South Node, and Black Moon Lilith. An overload of disruptive, disintegrating, and irrational behavior that fills the news is infuriating, steadily building from crescendo to crescendo. We can feel that we have been “exiled” from the outer world events that swirl around us. It can feel like navigating an abyss, that demons have been released, and that the creative, positive intentions that we have birthed about our collective future are threatened and under attack.
Mars-Lunar Node South-Lilith in Aquarius, Juno-Sedna in Taurus, Sun-Mercury in Libra constellate a mostly Air, out of sign grand trine. We want to talk about our mutual agreements and contracts with others in regard to lingering unresolved issues. New awareness and more conscious dynamics can emerge from relationship undercurrents.
The Venus-Uranus opposition squares the lunar nodes in Leo and Aquarius, and Mars, forming a fixed grand cross. In Evolutionary Astrology planets squaring the lunar nodes are considered to be “skipped steps”. How are we re-creating who we are within the collective? Are we finding ways to express our individual creativity as the gift of service to the community? Do we have one set of values and priorities for ourselves and loved ones, and a different one for others? How can we integrate our own values and priorities for the greater good?
Sun-Mercury-Ceres in Libra opposes Chiron forming a challenging T-square with Saturn-Vesta in Capricorn. Jason Holley likes to say that “the moon has craters, so all of our moons also have craters"… reminders of peak emotional impacts and collisions over time. Chiron and Ceres hold the memories of these wounds and deep personal losses. Pain is a symptom. Symptoms are attempts to heal. Voices are raised in anger and protest against consensus reality, seeking radical, constructive, progressive programs that will benefit the many, not just the few. Challenging emotions percolating up to the surface of our awareness can be remedied by taking responsibility for both the cause and the effect of the painful circumstances. Sometimes this means nothing more than recognizing that Fate lent a hand and to accept and surrender to that unfolding Destiny.
An individuating, and creatively inspired space opens from the quintile trine generated between Mars, Jupiter, and Pallas Athena. There is also creative support from quintiles to Venus from Pluto and Chiron. Vesta illuminates the direction that we need to go. Neptune opens our hearts. Mercury guides our way. Our daimon, higher self, guardian angel is “visibly” at the helm.
