Ilene WEISS "Shelter in Place"
“Eclipse of the light of heaven… such indeed is the character of the historic hour through which the world is now passing” --Martin Buber
On July 12th, 2018, at 10:47 pm EST, a partial eclipse occurs at 21° Cancer. The sign of Cancer is initiation into the water element. Cancer, and its ruler, the Moon correlate to the emotional body. The nature of water is that it fills up every space through which it passes. At the core of the archetype of Cancer is the lesson of emotional self-reliance: to connect with, and trust our own inner knowledge. The brain and the heart are both intelligent organs. The messages we receive from our brain are rational and can hold us in a cycle of analysis and paralysis, looping through life, making the same choices, over and over again. Relative to Cancer, the Moon, and the 4th House, we learn what it feels like to be in our bodies. On a biological level, emotions are simply chemicals coursing through our bloodstream. Holistically they are the body's messaging system, telling us something that we are not hearing from our rational brain. Symptoms are simply an attempt to heal. The messages that we receive from the heart come from a place of kinesthetic truth. What our gut tells us will never lead us astray.
At the heart of this partial solar eclipse, stands Pluto retrograde in Capricorn in exact opposition to the new moon. There is an intense power struggle going on. What used to be familiar has been turned around and upside down. It is no longer familiar. We long for safety and security. We feel threatened, oppressed, and powerless. We might be afraid that we are losing the battle. “Shelter in place” is too frequent a buzzword.
There are 2 grand trines, one earth, the other water, and a fixed T-square, at the time of the eclipse. The Cancer New Moon completes a water grand trine with Jupiter in Scorpio and Neptune retrograde in Pisces. This powerful sensitively emotional, psychic, and intuitive combination permeates the month ahead. The Veil is thin. We can hear whispers. You will “feel” it or “know” it, before you understand in with your head, or with your 5 ordinary senses. Emotional currents find turbulent and climactic expression. Ordinary events during the day trigger memories of the past, perhaps a childhood memory, or of someone who has passed.
Venus and Ceres in Virgo will complete an earth grand trine with Saturn retrograde in Capricorn, and Uranus in Taurus. The new moon forms a tense semisquare to the Venus - Ceres in Virgo arm of the earth trine. Virgo is about the practical aspects of our lifestyle: diet, health, wellness, and our daily routines. It is about the abundance and fertility of the Earth. It is also about the fertility of and work on the self. Virgo’s discernment produces mental analysis and discernment that turns inward upon ourselves, to discern the state of our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being, and to our core values. Virgo’s space holds an existential void; the inner conflict of knowing that something much greater than normal consensus reality exists, something transcendental, not eclipsed by the “realities” of everyday life. Priorities are changing. Some are driven internally. The difficult new priorities arise from external events. New urgencies emerge, necessitating new patterns and paradigms. There is a gnawing sense
of loss – an uncomfortable feeling of something slipping away. It feels personal; where we are most fragile and vulnerable. This is an opportunity to get hands-on with anything that needs work. In the northern hemisphere this is the time to connect to nature in your garden. Fertilize the potential abundance around you and inside you.
The new moon solar eclipse forms a quincunx to Vesta in Sagittarius Retrograde. We are driven inward. Our core commitment to who we are, our sacred bond with ourselves is intensified by events in the world around us. We feel uncomfortable, dislocated, even lost or homeless. We want to go home, but we no longer know where home is. We just want to go home.

Mars conjunct the lunar south node in Aquarius squares Uranus in Taurus, and opposes Athena conjunct the lunar north node in Leo, forming a tight fixed T-square. Athena, Olympian goddess of wisdom and good counsel, war, the defense of towns, heroic endeavor, weaving, pottery, virginal, inspired, warrior activist takes a place of honor on the lunar north node in Leo. “Wise Zeus himself bare her from his awful head, arrayed in warlike arms of flashing gold, and awe seized all the gods as they gazed.”1 We know something of Athena’s nature from her role in the Odyssey. In the course of his long and arduous travels home, Athena repeatedly informed Odysseus, as well as his wife Penelope, and his son Telemachus, with what they needed to know in order to fulfill their ‘destiny’. Athena’s mythology holds a number of similar stories in the Iliad as well, where she informed both the Greek and Trojan heroes in the story, very often adopting a simple disguise. In her role conjunct the lunar north node she informs us of what we are not remembering, or envisioning, and the choices that need to be made, concerning our path forward. Are we reliving the past or are we pro-actively dreaming our future?
