Spiritual Beings... Human Experience
The Venus Mars Conjunction of 2017
“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience”.
--Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
We are all familiar with this well-known New Age meme. What this means is that is that we are about the human experience. That experience is through our emotional body. The core human emotion is love. Relationships are ground zero for personal growth. The cycle of Venus and Mars correlates directly to how we are self-actualizing through relationship.
On October 5th, 2017 Venus and Mars came together at 19° Virgo initiating a 2-year cycle of relationships with our Self, and with others. This was the second of 3 conjunctions in the sign of Virgo, approximately two years apart. This long duration amplifies the archetypal importance of Virgo. A new cycle began on some level in all of our relationships. We can examine this planetary meet-up from the perspectives of mythology, astronomy, and astrology in order to understand how this current cycle will unfold.
Mythologically both of these inner personal planets are multivalent with a varied spectrum of expression. As a mythological archetype, Venus Aphrodite has as many faces as she has lovers. She is Inanna, Ishtar, and Hathor, goddess of desire and fertility, and sometimes war. Relationships are her playground. She can express as Circe the Enchantress, like Psyche with jealousy, or draped only with Eros need for vanity, beauty, and erotic love.
The planet Venus lies inside the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, and is our closest planetary neighbor. Venus embraces a sensual intimacy that touches body, mind, and spirit. At this conjunction with Mars, Venus greets us as the Morning Star, correlating to earthy Aphrodite Pandemos and Venus’s rulership of the sign of Taurus. In early February 2018 she
will once again meet up with the Sun in the sky and soon after become the Evening Star, Aphrodite Urania, goddess of the sky, lighting the night sky with her brilliant beauty. In early November 2018 she will retreat behind the Sun to re-emerge again as the Morning Star.

In the natural zodiac, Venus has rulership of 2 signs. Through inwardly directed Taurus, Venus expresses as relationship with self. Here is our self-worth, what we place value on, and where we find meaning. Venus correlates to magnetism, what we attract, the people and circumstances that show up in our lives. The magnetic frequency that is set by our self-worth/self-love quotient is the invisible energetic vibe that we broadcast, all the time, in all directions. Think of Venus as your personal Wi-Fi signal. The packets of data that contain holistic information will attract a matching holistic resonance. The data that is “corrupted” will attract an outer world event that is resonant to the distortion, whatever it is.
Generative Mars correlates to the self-actualizing Life Force that initializes at birth and drives us forward.
The Red Planet, Mars is our nearest neighbor in the direction outward towards the outer planets, in his mythic stance as Guardian and Protector. As the God of War he can express as the Greek Ares, forceful, violent, and savage, or as Roman Mars, full of valor and courage, Keeper of the Peace, maintaining boundaries, protector, and avenger. Is it surprising that Mars is the color of blood?
Mars is in relationship with 2 signs as well. In outwardly directed fire sign Aries, Mars expresses as our gut instinct. Generative Mars correlates to the self-actualizing Life Force that initializes at birth and drives us forward. As the traditional ruler of the sign of Scorpio, Mars does service as the “lower octave” of Pluto, making conscious choices, acting out according to the Soul’s (Pluto’s) deepest unconscious needs for security.

The cycle of Venus and Mars directly correlates to how one is self-actualizing through relationships.
“Love is not to be found in someone else, but in ourselves; we simply awaken it. But in order to do that, we need the other person. The universe only makes sense when we have someone to share our feelings with.”--Paulo Coelho
Chris BUZELLI "At Home in the Liminal World"
Virgo, and its polarity Pisces, as well as the 6th and 12th Houses, are threshold archetypes. They correlate to the liminal, “the space in-between”. Virgo is the culminating sign of the waxing cycle of the zodiac, the last of the “personal” archetypes that define individuality and persona. It follows the self-awareness realized as our ego/self-image in the inwardly directed sign of Cancer and the outwardly directed expression of the ego, the life purpose and persona correlating to the archetype of Leo. Progressing through the natural zodiac, in Leo we reach the fullest display of egoic expression, which often manifests as narcissism, self-absorption, and personal aggrandizement. The Self is inflated to its maximum, without self-restraint. Virgo is the transition space from the personal to the social sphere. We are not yet in the relationship arena correlating to the 7th House, Libra, and the upper, waning portion of the natural zodiac, but in Virgo we become aware of others for the first time.
The Soul’s singular purpose is self-awareness, in order to catalyze growth.
Virgo is ruled by the planet Mercury correlating to our intellect and cognition. As the archetype of Mercury’s inner expression, our perceptive gaze turns inward to become self-observation. We also become aware of social customs, standards, and norms. In the Virgo archetypal space we measure and compare ourselves to others, triggering our primal lunar nature that finds security only in what is familiar and insecurity when that familiarity is threatened, resulting in a crisis of self-awareness. We begin to become aware of any distortions in our selves so that we can find compatibility with others and cross the threshold that stands before us, joining in the social sphere of Libra and beyond.
Evolution is not just a theory--it is a fact. The Soul’s singular purpose is self-awareness, in order to catalyze growth. As we move through the sign of Virgo and enter the waning cycle of the horoscope we bring our selves to participate in the collective with its shared resources, beliefs and ideas, consensus realities, norms and standards, communal associations, and collective unconscious. But we cannot successfully navigate this outer world that now include others without the refinement of our own nature.
The need to “work on the Self” applies to culture and society at large as well. In order for community to thrive certain criteria needs to be met beginning with
social equality, brotherhood, mutual respect, and the protection of personal freedom. Culturally the collective is also passing through this Virgo/(Pisces) threshold in order to achieve these communal refinements.
Venus in Virgo will attract experiences that bring our attention to our relationship with ourselves.
Venus in Virgo will attract experiences that bring our attention to our relationship with ourselves. The work, a very Virgo word, will be about how we feel about ourselves, the values that we hold onto, and where our priorities lie. Given the insecurity and lack of faith in oneself that can emerge as a Virgo process, we could be wrestling with issues that seem larger than we can understand or resolve. In the natural zodiac, Virgo correlates to the Quincunx, or Inconjunct, 150° degree aspect of growth through crisis. Situations emerge externally, even more likely internally, that can create intellectual, and subsequent emotional chaos for us concerning something in ourselves that we have ignored or denied, creating guilt and the need to “cleanse and purify” what has been unearthed. In consort with Mars this can extend to remorse and regret for choices and actions that we have taken, perhaps instinctively, without any consideration.

Mars in Virgo will generate the circumstances and relationships that facilitate the healing that is found to be needed in the form of practitioners, “medicines”, and healing modalities. If our work is about our disconnected feeling of separateness, or a recognition of too much self-absorption, then service to others, either one-on-one or in community, will open as fulfilling pathways.
The Venus Mars conjunction makes a tight Disseminating Square to Saturn in Sagittarius. This is a crisis in consciousness. We are aware of something, but we are ignoring it, or denying it; something that has to do with having the courage to self-examine, taking responsibility for we have been, and who we are becoming; discerning the truth
about some long-held personal belief; making choices that actualize our values as priorities.
Mars in Virgo will generate the circumstances and relationships that facilitate the healing that is found to be needed in the form of practitioners, “medicines”, and healing modalities.
Venus and Mars oppose Chiron and Neptune in Pisces, both retrograde. Old relationship wounds resurface but not as re-wounding, rather in a forgiving and compassionate framework of forgiveness, letting go of doubt and blame, so that healing can begin.
The Venus Mars conjunction occurs only 2 hours before the Full Moon, with the Sun and Moon in Aries and Libra, the two signs ruled by Mars and Venus respectively, adding significant focus to relationship issues by the interplay and synthesis of Venus and Mars.
A Disseminating Trine from Pluto in Capricorn to Venus-Mars empowers us to find new footing in our relationships. At this conjunction, Pluto has only recently stationed direct, plowing deeply through the soils of relationship, eliminating was what needs to go, and seeding the future with a recharge of Soul intention—different choices, different priorities, newly empowered self-acceptance and forgiveness for self and others.
Squares and oppositions generate tensions and crises, often with others, that expose issues that need resolution. Trines on the other hand can bring in “helpers” and “gifts” that facilitate growth forward.
Love alone is capable of uniting living beings in such a way as to complete and fulfill them, for it alone takes them and joins them by what is deepest in themselves. All we need is to imagine our ability to love developing until it embraces the totality of men and the earth.
