The Leo Lunar and Aquarius Solar Eclipses
Eclipse Season Winter 2018
"Whose ample bosom and encircling folds
The dire necessity of nature holds.
Ætherial, earthly, whose all-various frame
Azure and full of forms, no power can tame.
All-seeing Heav'n, progenitor of Time,
Forever blessed, deity sublime,
Propitious on a novel mystic shine,
And crown his wishes with a life divine.”
--Orphic Hymn to Heaven (Uranus)
The planet Uranus, which in some quarters is said to embody the blueprint of America’s destiny holds his torch high in the heavens at both the Leo Lunar Eclipse on January 31st, and the Aquarius Solar Eclipse on February 15th, 2018. No stranger to chaos and discord he, this profoundly forward thinking Promethean energy joys in interrupting our normal daily patterns with willful intention. Disruption is not the objective or the ends, but it is rather the means by which the acceleration of evolutionary growth occurs.
Eclipses occur across the axis of the Moon’s nodes, where the Moon’s orbit intersects with the ecliptic, the circle created by the Earth's orbit around the Sun. These 2 powerful energetic crossroads mark the liminal time and space where the Moon and Earth weave their planetary frequencies in their diurnal motion. The intensity of eclipses is due to the fact that the lunar nodal axis correlates directly to the evolutionary path itself, from past to future, synthesized over the course of a lifetime in the present through direct emotional experience. Through most of 2018, until early November, the lunar nodes will continue their default backwards motion through the zodiacal signs of Leo and Aquarius highlighting how we are inspired to self actualize and to unfold our unique personalities, each according to Soul intention, in the same way that plants and trees extend themselves ever upwards, always leafing out towards the sunlight.

The Lunar Eclipse in Leo illuminates a new phase cycle of relationship that is unfolding with the New Year, as Venus and the Sun move into a new phase in their relationship in Aquarius--a relationship that began in Capricorn only 3 weeks earlier. A reboot or even a reformat of our emotional connections with others is taking place. A sense of emerging new values and necessities precipitate new priorities initiating new ways of relating to others and ourselves. Powerful subterranean emotional memories from the past re-surface to intensify this vibrantly colored lunation characterized astronomically as both “blood” and “blue”.
The Pamela Coleman Smith's illustration of the Rider-Waite Ace of Cup tarot card depicts a golden goblet being offered by an outstretched hand appearing out of thin air. The waters flow abundantly back to their source. The water element correlates directly to our emotional nature which is the medium through which we perceive and process our experiences as we move the space that time creates in our lives. The gift of unconditional love is offered. Are we able to receive it?
Luna passes close to dwarf planet Ceres. Ceres to the Romans, Demeter to the Greeks, Goddess of Agriculture and mother of Persephone the Queen of the Underworld, Ceres correlates to our search to discover and connect with what feeds our deepest emotional needs. We might sense the pending loss of something too personally painful to let go of, or the longing to reconnect with something or someone lost to us through the passage of time. As spiritual beings collectively having this human experience, we each have 4 separate intricately interwoven bodies--physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Each of these bodies requires different nutrients in order to survive and thrive. Our emotional nature needs Love, given and received-unmeasured and unconditional, with equal passion and strength.
How we see ourselves during this eclipse season is back-lit by an effusive, sublime, and ethereal radiance that upon close examination will reveal the most profound inner connection to the Source of who and what we truly are.
The Full Moon eclipse falls directly across Neptune's nodal axis with the Moon herself directly on The God of Earthquakes, Neptune's north node in Leo. The overseer of the all of the waters of our planet, Neptune has been comfortably immersed in his own native element -- the region of the natural zodiac that we know as the sign of Pisces. Deep water, inundation, even tsunami are all words that can be used to describe the potential states to
be experienced through this passage. This boundless zone can also dissolve any toxic emotions that arise through a process of self-realized compassion and forgiveness. How we see ourselves during this eclipse season is back-lit by an effusive, sublime, and ethereal radiance that upon close examination will reveal the most profound inner connection to the Source of who and what we truly are. Remember the trials of Odysseus (Ulysses), his struggle to find his way back home? How he sailed past Scylla and Charybdis, a narrow channel; high up on a crag on one side a gigantic vicious 6-headed monster who fed on anything and everything that came before it, and other the other side an enormous whirlpool that threatened to swallow his entire ship. The archetypal perspective sheds light on our own journeys through our own personal Charybdis—the demons, difficult to navigate maelstroms and whirlpools of our own lives.
At the Lunar Eclipse the Sun falls directly on Neptune's north node in Aquarius. The life purpose becomes the journey to be free from the conditions and restrictions that have created the inequalities, the racial, ethnic, and gender imbalances that have shaped our planet for millennia. Revolution is in the air.
Mars, recently into Sagittarius returns to the Vestals to heal the traumas he brought home from war. In Vesta’s purifying sacred fire, the God of War is able to burn away old dogmas, discover new truths, and bring in more adventurous ways of thinking. Aided by Jupiter in Scorpio’s facilitating aspect to Wounded Healer and Mentor Chiron in Pisces, and Saturn firmly rooted in his native Capricorn, real healing can take place that can forge a future that is different from the past, built on new beliefs.

Mercury, Guide of Souls appears at the last minute of the last degree of Capricorn. Completely at home as well in this liminal passageway, he is preparing for his entry into Aquarius and his superior conjunction with Sun and Moon 2 days after the Solar Eclipse. At the balsamic point in the cycle, what is unsettled comes up for resolution. At the last degree of a sign the frequency is for the closure necessary to cross the threshold and embody the new archetypal energetic pattern.
At the Solar Eclipse on February 15th, Mercury embeds this imperative into the energetic frequency of the eclipse itself. Personal narratives, the stories, the truth and lies that we tell ourselves and we tell others emerge into consciousness. The higher mind and the lower mind connect to find either synthesis or antithesis. Mental patterning is scrubbed clean of fixed notions, worn-out understandings, and misinterpretations
messages. Inspiration comes of its own volition, sometimes with awe-inspiring intensity and grandiosity. The truth and lies that we tell ourselves and we tell others emerge into consciousness. By the time of the Solar Eclipse, Venus will have left the turbulent waters of Aquarius behind and will be feeling exalted in the sign of her “higher octave”, as she slips into more serene waters. Venus will be approaching a meetup with Neptune in Pisces. The sign of the 2 fishes is sometimes said to correlate with the divine birth of the Goddess of Sex, Love, and Beauty, interestingly as the result of the trauma inflicted on her father Uranus. So her passage from Aquarius, said to be ruled by Uranus, into Pisces restates a numinous return homeward.
"Naked and alone we came into exile. In her dark womb we did not know our mother's face; from the prison of her flesh have we come into the unspeakable and incommunicable prison of this earth.
Which of us has known his brother? Which of us has looked into his father's heart? Which of us has not remained forever prison-pent? Which of us is not forever a stranger and alone?
O waste of lost, in the hot mazes, lost, among bright stars on this weary, unbright cinder, lost! Remembering speechlessly we seek the great forgotten language, the lost lane-end into heaven, a stone, a leaf, an unfound door. Where? When?
O lost, and by the wind grieved, ghost, come back again.”
